Do you hit the ball great on the range but can't take your skills out to tournaments?

In this week's golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from Ronald who had this to say about his game:

I hit the ball pure on range and chip and putt well on practice green, but can’t perform up to my ability in tournaments. I have been told I have a very smooth and great tempo swing, but I suffer from deceleration and lack of free swings under pressure. I am a former City and State Junior champion. I am a better athlete than most playing in these events but can’t reach by potential and hence don’t enter due to fear of failure.
